Community Engagement & Organizing

At our core, La Casa works directly with the community to help determine challenges, move roadblocks, and create opportunities to improve the quality of life for all. We focus this work in Newark’s Lower Broadway neighborhood and work with partners to address underlying issues including public safety, education, business development, and other quality of life areas.

Lower Broadway Neighborhood Association

“Festival de la Familia” Annual Festival

La Casa de Don Pedro hosts this annual free street fair in Newark’s Lower Broadway neighborhood to celebrate the rich Latinx diversity our neighborhood in partnership with The City of Newark and many sponsors. We close down the Lower Broadway commercial corridor replace it with dozens of tents set up by community partners who share their resources. With a main stage offering free live music, family activities, and entertainment it’s an annual event not to be missed.

Advocacy

By collaborating with a variety of advocacy groups, La Casa advocates with and for a variety of community driven needs. In 2020 alone we have worked with the Newark Public Safety Collaborative (NPSC) to identify property and violent crime and within close proximity to our community centers in Newark. We also activity participate in Advocacy for Eviction and Foreclosure Protection and Environmental Justice legislation during the coronavirus pandemic. Our environmental justice advocacy around a new Combined Sewer Overflow Long Term Control Plan with the Newark Doing Infrastructure Green (DIG) group helps advocate for clean water for all while we regularly support social, racial, and environmental justice state and federal legislation.
