10th Annual Festival de La Familia| September 23 2017

The annual fair celebrated Newark’s Hispanic Heritage, Diversity, and Unity for Mexico and Puerto Rico

La Casa de Don Pedro, in partnership with the City of Newark held Newark’s 10th Annual Festival de la Familia on Saturday, September 23rd. Families, friends, local partner organizations and volunteers looking to lend a hand gathered on Broadway between Bloomfield Pl. & Broad St. for the free, lively, and exciting event. In light of the current disasters, La Casa de Don Pedro collected funds for the American Red Cross to deploy resources to where they are needed most in Puerto Rico and Mexico.  View photos HERE.

Held in the heart of Newark’s Lower Broadway Community, Festival de la Familia celebrates Newark’s vibrant diversity and the strength of the community.  In total, La Casa raised more than $800 received from individuals and businesses along the corridor.  La Casa de Don Pedro will leverage those dollars with an additional $700.  Half of the dollars raised will support Newark’s Hurricane Maria Relief Fund for Puerto Rico that public officials have organized with a goal to raise $100,000.  The remaining contribution will support the American Red Cross efforts in areas impacted by the recent earthquake in Mexico.

Street performances, musicians and artists showcased music and dance from countries like Peru, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia and the continent of Africa. These included Yahaye Kamate Drummers, Ruben Figueroa and Conjunto Ritmo Tropical, Cimarrones, Alianza Latina, Peruvian Dance troupe, and Flor de Café. Partner organizations such as the Newark Museum, Focus Hispanic Center for Community Development, The Newark Public Library, New Jersey Citizen Action, and others shared activities and resources. La Casa provided free HIV testing and renowned muralist Layqa Nuna Yawar began his work on a large community mural along the corridor.

Festival de la Familia was made possible by the support from Prudential, PSEG, Valley National Bank, JP Morgan Chase, M&T Bank, Rutgers University- Newark, TD Bank, North Jersey Federal Credit Union, Horizon NJ Health; Capacity Benefits & Financial Services, and the Lower Broadway Neighborhood Association.
