La Casa es su Casa 2018

La Casa de Don Pedro hosted its signature cocktails and hors-d’oeuvres reception, La Casa es su Casa with the theme, “Health Matters,” on Tuesday, May 8th at Nico Kitchen + Bar. Guests enjoyed musical performances, program testimonials, presentations by the honorees and La Casa’s leadership, and a youth performance. “Health Matters” shared La Casa de Don Pedro’s role – and responsibility – as a comprehensive, community development organization to help guide its community on a path to progress by addressing all of the factors – from education, housing, employment, social supports, access to health services, and more – to enhance people’s quality of life and to allow them to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

With Alexandra Hill, the Afternoon News Anchor and Reporter with WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM as the evening’s emcee, La Casa es su Casa “Health Matters” honored New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver, Dr. Denise V. Rodgers, Vice Chancellor for Interprofessional Programs at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, and Pamela Clarke, Ph.D, MBA, President & CEO of Newark Community Health Centers. The evening’s honorees highlighted their excitement about the future health of Greater Newark with La Casa de Don Pedro serving a critical, supportive role.

Michael Allen, Javier Morales, and Patricia Coyotecatl shared testimonials about how La Casa de Don Pedro has helped keep themselves, their family and the community healthy. Michael Allen, a participant in La Casa’s Ryan White Program, performed a moving spoken word piece called “Stigma” bringing awareness about battling the stigma of HIV. Javier Morales shared his experiences giving back to the community by delivering healthy, fresh, nutritious meals to La Casa’s kids. Patricia Coyotecatl spoke about becoming a community leader with the support of La Casa de Don Pedro’s Family Success and Head Start Centers.

La Casa’s kids showed how their health matters by performing a Zumba demonstration as a fun and expressive way to keep fit and healthy.

That evening, La Casa de Don Pedro launched a Wellness Center Appeal with a goal to raise $5,000 by June 30th to provide free access to exercise equipment, coaches, and a caring staff. If you would like to help La Casa de Don Pedro reach its goal you can do so online.
