Hundreds of families and children enjoyed a more festive holiday season thanks to the dozens of contributors to La Casa de Don Pedro’s 2nd Annual #GivingTuesday™ campaign.  La Casa, among 50,000+ other partners worldwide, joined in the #GivingTuesday™ movement as a way to inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities and give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support.  La Casa’s #Giving Tuesday™ campaign officially launched on December 2nd with a kick-off reception held in partnership with Aljira, A Center for Contemporary Art. Inspired by La Casa de Don Pedro, the City of Newark proclaimed #GivingTuesday™ citywide and presented an official proclamation at the reception.

La Casa’s campaign, which ran through December 31st, set goals to raise funds to support the organization’s programs and services, fulfill holiday toy wishes for children, provide holiday dinners for families in need, and fulfill wishes for the organizations’ community centers. This year’s campaign raised over $10,000 and collected holiday food and toy donations estimated at over $11,000.

“The most meaningful gift we can give vulnerable families in our community during the holiday season is a helping hand,” says Raymond Ocasio, Executive Director, La Casa de Don Pedro. “We are proud to have met the needs of those we serve and are grateful to our supporters for helping us meet some of our goals.”

Mayor Ras J. Baraka announced today that the City of Newark will proclaim Tuesday, December 2, as #GivingTuesday – Newark’s Day of Giving. The proclamation of #GivingTuesday in the city, spearheaded by La Casa de Don Pedro, a comprehensive community-based corporation based in the City of Newark’s North End, will be the first of its kind.  Other Newark nonprofit organizations including Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art and WBGO Jazz Radio are  also participating in the global Day of Giving, www.givingtuesday.org.

Coinciding with the Thanksgiving Holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday inspires people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities and give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support.

“It was that great English writer Charles Dickens who wrote that the Holiday season is the time when want is felt most keenly, and this is as true today as it was 150 years ago. However, by mixing 21st century technology and timeless concepts of compassion and love, we can support those at-risk and in need,” Mayor Baraka said. “I am proud of our partnerships with so many caring non-profits in Newark who work tirelessly to empower lives and transform Newark into the City we can all believe in. I urge residents to take time this holiday season to support the charity or non-profit of their choice.”

La Casa de Don Pedro, in partnership with Aljira, will jump start the giving season with on Tuesday, December 2, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., by co-hosting a free #GivingTuesday kick-off reception. The event will also be the launch of Aljira’s and La Casa de Don Pedro’s end of the year campaign. Contributions will be graciously accepted to either or both organizations. Each non-profit will be responsible for managing their own campaign.

“This year, our goal is to encourage others to choose a gift that ultimately gives back,” said La Casa de Don Pedro Executive Director Raymond Ocasio. “No matter how individuals choose to contribute, they can be assured that they are making a difference in our community during this holiday season. We are grateful to the City of Newark for recognizing #GivingTuesday and excited to be partnering with Aljira to celebrate the this special day.”

“This is a wonderful occasion for Aljira and La Casa de Don Pedro, together, to applaud and thank loyal donors,” said Executive Director, Aljira Executive Director Victor L. Davson. “Through their generosity hundreds and hundreds of donors are the mainstay of vitally important support and encouragement of nonprofits and charities.  We wouldn’t be able to provide valuable services to our communities without their dedication.”
