Mayor Ras J. Baraka, The Newark Municipal Council, Deputy Mayor of Civic Engagement and Community Partnerships Luis Lopez, and La Casa de Don Pedro Executive Director Raymond Ocasio, announced today that the City of Newark will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Sunday, October 5th, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., by co-hosting the 7th Annual “Festival de la Familia Latina” (Latino Family Festival) with La Casa de Don Pedro. The festival will be held on Broadway between Bloomfield Place and Broad Street, on the Lower Broadway commercial corridor.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the annual festival celebrates Latino arts and culture with a wide array of fun family-oriented activities, and information from key community stakeholders in government, non-profit, and community organizations.

“Festival de la Familia Latina is Newark’s great annual festival celebrating the rich and diverse heritage of our Latino community, and how it contributes to creating a Newark we can all believe in. As Mayor of Newark, I salute the leadership of La Casa de Don Pedro Executive Director Raymond Ocasio and the entire Festival de La Familia Latina team for their commitment to this annual event and urge all residents to join in celebrating our City’s rich Latino heritage,” said Mayor Baraka.

This year’s festival will offer a variety of activities including free health screenings, arts and crafts, inflatable bouncers, Zumba, dunk tank and an obstacle course. The event will offer the area’s only farmer’s market open on a weekend – by Vacchiano Farms as well as healthy food demonstrations and tastings.

Hispanic cultural performances and music include: salsa by La 95, capoeira by Samba Novo Company, traditional Peruvian dance, bomba y plena by Plena Dulce, merengue tipico by Dominación Tipico, Dynamic Dynasty, DJ Gabe and more!

“Now in our 7th year, we are thrilled to continue to provide to Newark a day that celebrates Hispanic culture that reflects the City’s vibrant communities. We welcome everyone, no matter one’s background to learn, enjoy, and experience the sounds, flavors, and colors of Hispanic heritage in the Lower Broadway community this Sunday,” said Raymond Ocasio. “As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are also pleased that St. Michael’s Hospital will be present to enroll people in breast cancer and prostate cancer screenings. Cancer impacts all of us, including our own colleagues at La Casa.”

Community partners including Newark Museum, NJPAC, Newark YMCA, FOCUS, Essex County College, Rising Tide Capital, and many more, will host information tables, health screenings, and provide free activities for families. The Newark Museum’s Generation Fit exhibit will present demonstrations and activities emphasizing nutrition and exercise, while La Casa de Don Pedro will provide face painting, wacky hair spraying, “ginormous” musical chairs, among other family friendly activities.
