Johanna: An Immigrant Success Story

Johanna was determined not to let her limited English skills prevent her from excelling in the United States, especially given her higher education and background in Health and Nutrition in her home country.  Johanna learned about La Casa and enrolled in the English as Second Language (ESL) program as a High Beginning level speaker. After successfully completing the course, Johanna was referred to the Hispanic Women’s Resource Center High Intermediate Conversation level.  In a few short months she completed this second class and enrolled in the Center’s Language Transition Program where she received career readiness and job readiness training that equipped her with information to transition into higher education. La Casa is proud to report that after completing the Language Transition Program, Johanna enrolled as a non-matriculating student for an ESL Level I Course at Essex County College. She is now one step closer to reaching her goal of achieving the U.S. equivalent of her foreign degree.
