Donatefostering self-sufficiency, empowerment
and neighborhood revitalization since 1972
Hello, My name is Sherard Thornton, Sr. I want to share my story with you in regards to the strides I have made since my release from Prison and my re -entry into society. A little over a year ago while sitting in the Day Reporting Center conference room in Newark, NJ I had the opportunity to listen to a lecture given by Mr. A. Afterward I knew I had to come down to La Casa and enroll in the programs which he spoke of. I was truly inspired by what Mr. A had to say, and I immediately became focused.
After only a couple of days attending La Casa, an interview was set up for me at a business called Five Guys located in Millburn, NJ. I was all set for the interview except I had no tie, so I called Mr. A and he offered to let me use one of his. That tie will always hold a special place in my heart. I was surprisingly hired after only my first interview and I knew right then that my new life had begun. Today only 13 months later, I have advanced from a $7.25 crew person to a $40K a year salaried General Manager. I was only able to do this through hard work and determination. I sincerely thank Mr. A, and Ms. Rivera for believing in me and giving me all the support and guidance to get me where I am today. I give thanks and praise to God for giving me the opportunity to turn my life around.
I am an example of how ex-offenders can move on from a mistake and still be a positive citizen in society. Our destiny is in our own hands. Our Life is what we make of it. We must stay strong, focused, and determined in accomplishing our personal goals.
Sincerely,
Mr. Sherard Thornton, Sr.
