Project Backpack

Project Backpack is La Casa de Don Pedro’s campaign to support Newark’s children as they get ready for school.  From June – August 2019 we gathered donations of more than 600 backpacks from dozens of donors. We distributed the backpacks to Newark children at the 12th Annual Festival de la Familia on Sunday, August 18th, 2019 that we co-hosted with the City of Newark.

“Project Backpack” aimed to make the coming 2019/2020 school year a memorable one by ensuring that Newark children return to school ready to succeed and on the path toward an enriching education!

On Saturday, August 3rd CKO Kickboxing-Newark held a Project Backpack Punch-A-Thon! Members & non-members attended and worked out for a good cause! 100% of the proceeds went towards Project Backpack.

La Casa de Don Pedro and friends hosted an evening of Wine & Cheese! Guests ages 21+ enjoyed a night of art, entertainment, great company, food & drinks, and charitable giving! Admission to the fundraiser was one new quality backpack or $15 worth of school supplies.

Ways To Get Involved In Project Backpack:

We sought volunteers to get involved. Here were the ways:

  1. Drop off school supplies or backpacks by August 9, 2019 to La Casa de Don Pedro’s Administrative Office at: 75 Park Ave, Newark, NJ.
  2. Volunteer with us during the week of August 12th to assemble backpacks.
  3. Volunteer at Festival de la Familia to help distribute the backpacks.

All Project Backpack supporters donating $250 or more worth of backpacks and/or school supplies were recognized on all Festival de la Familia and Project Backpack materials, including social media, e-blasts, banners, posters, and T-Shirts.  Businesses including Valley Bank, JP Morgan Chase & Co. and M&T Bank held their own drives to support the cause.

Donations were collected through August 9th.
