Information on the Vaccine for Children

Children ages 5 to 11 are now eligible to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine and are encouraged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible, following the authorization and recommendation of the vaccine by the FDA and CDC.

The pediatric Pfizer vaccine is administered as a two-dose vaccine, three weeks apart, at a lower dose than the dosage for those ages 12 and older. Find vaccination locations with pediatric doses at covid19.nj.gov/finder, labeled with “Min. age: 5 years.”

Children ages 12 and over are eligible to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine using the same dosage as adults age 17 and over.

Covid-19 Booster Information

Everyone age 12 and older is eligible to get a COVID-19 booster dose. The best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to get vaccinated and boosted if eligible.

  • Moderna recipients age 18 and older: should get a booster at least 6 months after second shot.
  • Pfizer recipients age 12 and older should get a booster at least 5 months after second shot.
  • Johnson & Johnson recipients age 18 and older should get a Pfizer or Moderna booster at least 2 months after initial shot.

For children younger than 12 a booster is not recommended at this time. unless they are immunocompromised.

The Pfizer “booster” shot is a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine, which contains 30 micrograms of MRNA. The Moderna “booster’ is a half dose of the initial vaccine. The initial vaccine has 100 micrograms of MRNA, meaning the booster has 50 micrograms of MRNA in it. Here’s an article from December 2021 from MSNBC for more information on deciding between the two boosters.

Additional COVID-19 Vaccination Information

If you can’t make it to one of La Casa’s vaccination events, the State of New Jersey’s COVID-19 Information Hub offers details on numerous locations and events throughout the state where you can get vaccinated. See below for details or visit covid19.nj.gov/pages/vaccine.

If you’ve already been vaccinated in New Jersey, be sure to download the Docket app so you can access your immunization records electronically.

Docket is a new app from the NJ Department of Health that makes it easier for you and your family to securely access your COVID-19 vaccination record.

If you don’t have your vaccination card with you or you have lost it, you can easily access your record through the app to provide proof of COVID-19 immunizations as needed.

The Docket app is now available in the App store or on Google Play in English or Spanish depending on Smartphone settings.

Individuals with an email or phone number on file with the New Jersey Immunization Information System can access and download their COVID-19 vaccination record using the app. The app can also provide access to family members’ records through a shared account.

For any Newark resident who needs a ride to a vaccination appointment, this FREE resource is available to you. Don’t let a ride come between you and your health.
